Top 10 Frequently Asked Questions

Over the years Ive been asked hundreds of different questions about StarMurals and about how I operate.  It makes sense that people have lots of questions, almost no one has ever seen or even heard about my art form.  Heres a list that comes to mind of the Top Ten StarMurals questionsand their brief answers.  For expanded answers or answers to any other questions, contact me.

Do your StarMurals really look this good?

In a wordNothey look betterso much better its hard to believe.  These web images are only 2 dimensionalStarMurals are 5 dimensional.  So, at best you can only perceive about 40% of the effect and impact.  You cannot see or feel the best parts of the illusiondepth, glow and movement.  Imagine that!

Are StarMurals permanent and safe?

In a wordYes.  All of my proprietary materials are 100% safe and the process is permanent.  At the core, my paints are made of water-based acrylics that are safe to humans and animals in every way.  My materials are non-radioactive, non-toxic and permanent.  Material Safety Data Sheets are availableif required.

What makes StarMurals glow and twinkle?

I thought youd want to know.  That of course is my trade secretand I closely protect all information relating to my proprietary formulae, tools, techniques and processes.  That being said, at the core, are the highest quality light-gathering phosphorescent materials, which have the amazing ability to absorb and store light, and the ability to radiate that light for up to 25 hoursin the dark.  Regarding the twinkling and moving effectthe whole mural is moving and shimmering ever so subtly.  How that happens is a secret but I can say thisthe movement is actually happeningat the sub-atomic particle physics level.

Can StarMurals be painted on any type of ceiling?

Once again, the short answer isYes, and I have.  Ive created StarMurals on all types of ceilingstape & texture, popcorn, acoustic panels, carpet, vinyl, fiberglass, wood, masonry, knotty pineand more.  All surfaces are in the realm of possibility.  To discuss your particular situationcontact me

What advance preparations do I need to make?

Over the years I have worked around everything in my clients livestheir beds, furniture, exercise equipment, toys and much more.  These days I prefer to not deal with the bed issue.  Although I have equipment for that, I prefer a clear floor space.  Objects that dont extend into the room more than 2 feet and are placed against walls are OKI just drape them and reach over them.  Other objects in the room that are easily movable, are not desired, but I can live with some of this.  The other most important thing is the age and condition of your paint.  If you feel that you will be painting the ceiling within the next few years, do it first, before your StarMural, it will make a big difference.  The same applies to popcorn ceilings, if youre going to be replacing this stuff, do it before adding a StarMural.

What if my ceiling has a fan or overhead light?

No worriesthats easy stuff.  In my experience, 90% of the ceilings Ive painted had some, or all, of the following ceiling objects, fans, lights, smoke detectors, ventilation gratesand more.  I see it as my responsibility to work with these.  First, I formulate special paints for these fixtures, as they are usually a different sheen than the rest of the ceiling.  Next, I draw them into the overall picture by painting small stars on them.  I also like to work these into the picture by airbrushing over them and including them inside dynamic featuresthey really get lost that way.

How long does it take to paint a StarMural?

Good questionand one with no easy answer.  People often ask me that question, in conjunction with this addendumfor an average size room.  Let me tell you, peoples ideas of average size rooms are all over the board, up to 1,000 square feet sometimeswhile others have in mind a tract house size 10 x 12 bedroom.  So, because theres no easy answer to average, theres no easy answer to the question.  It takes as long as it takesit is original art that is being created you know, on a ladder, in the dark, by myself, on your ceiling, invisibly, with one arm tied behind by backjust kidding.  The real-life reality of my work is thisI have some work, like the SkyLites that can be created in just a few hours.  I have the larger but more basic ceilings which are usually completed within one dayoften a very long dayonce I get started Im highly energized and I move at the speed of light.  These days, also, on the more complex deep space features, depending on the room size, these can take from 2 or 3 days to a week or more to complete.
